Presenteeism is the result of employees attending work when they are not fully functioning due to health problems. This effects employees who do not go off on sick leave at all when they are ill or they may return to work before they are fully recovered. Presenteeism does not include employees who are healthy but are not productive in the workplace.
Presenteeism results in lower productivity, more pressure on co-workers and reduced work morale. In certain instances an ill employee at work may endanger their own lives or health or that of their colleagues.
Presenteeism results from intense work pressure and the effects of an increasing competitive work environment. Additional pressure results in stress which is also the most common symptom of presenteeism.
The detection of presenteeism is more difficult than absenteeism and the following may be included in a work attendance policy:
Identification of employees who are never ill
Identification of employees with high responsibility levels and work pressure
Regular counselling and support for these employees
The introduction of a return to work interview will identify employees who are ill and return to work before they are fully recovered.
Prevention is better than cure and the creation of a suitable work environment is often the best solution. A policy of being firm but fair with regards to absenteeism creates the best environment where employees understand that if they abuse their sick leave they will be dealt with firmly but if they are ill and need assistance that they will be treated fairly.
