The graph alongside gives an illustration of the possible trend in direct absenteeism costs into the future.  The example is based on a projection of current absenteeism for blue collar workers in the manufacturing industry in the Eastern Cape. The curve becomes steeper after 2005, the intended date for the roll-out of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in the province.
Although ART is likely to increase life expectancy and improve quality of life, there is a concern regarding the increased incidence of absenteeism as people adjust to the side effects and other complications of adhering to a complex treatment regimen.
