Cape Town - The flu, gastroenteritis and back pain are the main reasons for sick notes in South Africa.
Cams Solutions, which measures absences in the workplace, used doctor's sick notes of more than 150 000 employees in 60 South African companies in the study, which found that these three are the biggest culprits when it comes to employees staying home.
Executive head Johnny Johnson, said companies lost up to R1.2m annually in direct costs due to employees being absent due to back pain alone.
Statistics show that just over 11% of total sick leave in South Africa was approved for flu. A bit less than 8% was for back pain and almost 5% was for gastroenteritis.
Gastroenteritis happened mostly in January and February, while flu kept South Africans in bed between March and November. In December, the main reason was back pain.
